Members of the Rotary Clubs of Sayre and Athens, PA and Waverly, NY visited the new location of The Bridge, located at 515 Chemung Street, Waverly, NY for lunch and a tour. Charlie Hammond, Sayre Rotarian and staunch supporter of the Bridge told those present that when they were told they had to vacate their prior location, he knew that God would provide – and He certainly did.
The new location is spacious enough for racks full of dishes and linens as well as a room the size of a formal show room to display the furniture available. Charlie then introduced Dick Friend, who with his wife Bobette is a Co-President of the Bridge. Dick spoke about the various ministries of the Bridge including “Vouchers” issued to those individuals who meet eligibility requirements for assistance with shelter, utilities, food, transportation and other emergency situations; “Kids At Risk” which is a ministry through the Valley school districts who anonymously identify children’s needs for clothing, school supplies, or other necessary services; “Catastrophic Assistance” is available for individuals that experience unexpected major life altering events; “Helping Hands” which is the furniture ministry and which is the ministry that Charlie Hammond is in charge of; and “Clothes Closet” which is located at the North Waverly Chapel in a free standing building behind the church and which provides clothing, small household items, books and toys free of charge to those in need.
As a further example of the Bridge’s positive affect on our Communities, after the flood of 2011 the Bridge was instrumental in helping hundreds of survivors by distributing over $300,000 in funds raised through the Valley Rally. According to The Bridge’s brochure, “The aim of The Bridge is to bridge the gaps in life in the name of Jesus Christ, and to provide help when and where other agencies are not available”.
